Feed Directive Services

Antibiotics are one of the most commonly used treatments for ailments in animals. Here at Massie Veterinary Services, we are committed to helping your operation use them correctly to minimize harm and liability.

Effective January 1, 2017, federal rules were changed regarding how antibiotics can be administered to animals in feed and through drinking water. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now requires veterinary oversight whenever antibiotics are administered to any food animal species via feed or water, even if the animals are not intended for food production and all antibiotics used must be supported by a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) or prescription.

The FDA cites the increasing threat of antibiotic resistance as their main reason for taking action to reduce over-the-counter antibiotics and requiring that all antibiotics used for feed animals have VFD or prescription status. The hope is that by doing this, we will be able to reduce resistance and preserve our antibiotic supply.

Massie Veterinary Services is committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of both animals and their people and contributing to the public good. We will work with you to make sure you have medication and that it is administered in a timely manner whenever the need arises.
